At Terroir Africa, wine has never just been a drink. It’s a dialogue between land and legacy, a vessel of culture, craft, and connection. Our journey began in France. Bordeaux to be precise, where structure and elegance dominate the glass. However, as with all great journeys, one region naturally led to another.
Now, we find ourselves in Italy.
Why Italy? Because its wines, like its food and people, are expressive, layered, and deeply rooted in place. Italian cuisine, with its tomato-rich dishes, fresh herbs, and soulful simplicity, feels almost familiar to us in Africa. There’s a beautiful symmetry between our two cultures: bold, flavourful, and driven by heritage.
For our first foray, we ventured to the warmer southeastern coast, the Puglia and Abruzzo regions kissed by the sea and shaped by sun and soil. These wines are fruit-forward and full of warmth, speaking in notes of pineapple, white lotus, passion fruit, brioche, and mango for whites, and ripe plum, spice, truffle, vanilla, and blackberries for the reds. Rich, yet balanced, just like the cuisine they were born to accompany.
But what makes this collection truly special are the stories behind the bottles.
The Sisters of Tenuta Tre Gemme: Abruzzo
Our first discovery was in Abruzzo, Tenuta Tre Gemme, a vineyard managed by sisters Anna and Carla Perrucci. Nestled in one of the most prestigious Montepulciano D’Abruzzo DOC zones, their legacy began with their father, Don Rocco Perrucci, a revered figure whose presence is still deeply felt on the land.
Their wines reflect not just skill but soul. One unforgettable detail: their logo, inspired by a thousand-year-old sculpture of St. Anne holding the Madonna, found in a chapel on their estate. Three ancient gems once embedded in the artifact representing intellect, heart, and earth now symbolize the spirit of their wines: thoughtful, passionate, and deeply grounded.
The Quiet Power of Rino: Puglia
In Puglia, we met Rino, a master winemaker whose humility is matched only by the brilliance of his wines. Unlike many, Rino began our tasting with his top-tier Baronaggio DOC Riserva, a bold move, but one sip was all it took to understand why.
Rino’s wines are not only celebrated in Italy but internationally acclaimed, with top ratings on platforms like Vivino and accolades across the board. Each wine in his range, whether entry-level or premium, bears the mark of excellence, patience, and pride.
